Indian Railways approved multiple projects for the expansion of Kavach 4.0, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system

¨     Indian Railways approved multiple projects on 15 June 2026 for the expansion of Kavach 4.0, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.

¨     The approved works include route-based deployment, locomotive installation, and communication upgrades under the railway safety programme.

¨     Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system for Indian Railways.

¨     It is designed to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), head-on collisions, rear-end collisions, and overspeeding.

¨     The system ensures safety through continuous train monitoring and automatic control.

¨     The Ministry of Railways sanctioned Kavach Version 4.0 on 598 Route km across 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat.

¨     The Ahmedabad Division project was approved at a cost of ₹140 crore.

¨     The approval covers the remaining sections of the division after an earlier sanction for about 702 Route km.

¨     Indian Railways also approved Kavach 4.0 implementation on 811 Route km in the Ambala Division of Northern Railway.

¨     The Ambala Division project has a sanctioned cost of ₹201 crore.

¨     The project covers railway sections in Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

¨     The expansion of Kavach 4.0 aims to enhance railway safety and reduce the risk of train accidents across the network.
