Government of India approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera semi high-speed double-line rail project

¨     The Government of India approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera semi high-speed double-line rail project on 13 May 2026.

¨     The estimated cost of the project is around ₹20,667 crore.

¨     A new railway line of approximately 134 km will be developed in Gujarat under the project.

¨     It is considered India’s first semi high-speed rail project developed with indigenous technology.

¨     The rail corridor will connect Ahmedabad, Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the proposed Dholera Airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex.

¨     The project aims to improve rail connectivity in the Ahmedabad–Dholera region and strengthen Gujarat’s industrial and infrastructure network.

¨     The design speed of trains under the project will be 220 km/h.

¨     The operational speed of trains has been fixed at 200 km/h.

¨     After completion, the travel time between Sabarmati and Dholera will be reduced to just 48 minutes.

¨     The project is targeted for completion by 2030-31.

¨     It is being developed in line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

¨     PM Gati Shakti aims to improve multimodal connectivity and logistics planning in India.

¨     India’s semi high-speed rail network also includes the Vande Bharat Express.

¨ Vande Bharat Express is regarded as a modern high-speed passenger train system developed in India.
