India, Assam, and Nagaland signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the joint exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas in the Assam-Nagaland border region

¨     India, Assam and Nagaland signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for joint exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas along the Assam–Nagaland border.

¨     The agreement covers six identified disputed hydrocarbon fields and a border area of more than 1,000 square kilometres.

¨     The MoU was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Amit Shah, Hardeep Singh Puri, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Neiphiu Rio.

¨     The agreement establishes a formal framework for coordinated hydrocarbon exploration in an area affected by long-standing boundary and jurisdictional disputes since the mid-1990s.

¨     Crude oil and natural gas are hydrocarbons found in sedimentary basins and extracted through drilling and production systems.

¨     The Assam–Nagaland border region has remained underutilised for petroleum exploration due to unresolved territorial issues.

¨     The MoU provides for a 50:50 revenue-sharing arrangement between Assam and Nagaland from the extracted oil and gas.

¨     The Union Home Minister stated that existing production capacity of 1,000 to 1,500 barrels per day could increase more than tenfold.

¨     One of the identified fields is estimated to have potential value exceeding ₹15,000 crore.

¨     The agreement is expected to improve resource utilisation, reduce inter-state tensions, and boost hydrocarbon production in the region.
