India unveiled its first
EXIM-grade (Export-Import) shipping container on 3 July 2026.
¨
The container was
unveiled at the Maersk–CONCOR Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Dadri, Uttar
Pradesh.
¨
The launch was
inaugurated by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda
Sonowal.
¨
The container was
manufactured by the DCM Shriram Group.
¨
EXIM (Export-Import)
containers are used for international cargo transportation by sea, rail, and
road.
¨
Shipping containers are
standardized metal containers designed for intermodal transportation.
¨
Container capacity is
commonly measured in Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
¨
The India-made container
complies with ISO standards and the International Convention for Safe
Containers (CSC).
¨
ISO standards specify requirements
related to container dimensions, strength, handling, and stacking.
¨
The CSC is an
international treaty that establishes global safety standards for shipping
containers.
¨
The project supports the
Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by promoting domestic manufacturing and reducing
dependence on imports.
¨ It is backed by the ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme announced in the Union Budget 2026–27.
¨ The scheme aims to increase India’s annual container manufacturing capacity to around 7.5 lakh TEUs.
