Union Cabinet Approves Two Mega Highway
Projects Worth ₹14,114.81 Crore

Union Cabinet has
approved two major highway infrastructure projects with a total investment of
₹14,114.81 crore.
¨
The projects include an
8.1-km six-lane tunnel in Delhi and a 117.7-km access-controlled Greenfield
Highway in Uttar Pradesh.
¨
The Delhi Tunnel Project
on NH-148AE will connect Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant
Kunj at an estimated cost of ₹6,969.67 crore.
¨
The tunnel will be
developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and is expected to be completed
in about five years.
¨
It includes a 3.14-km
twin-tube tunnel beneath the Southern Ridge Forest, where Tunnel Boring Machine
(TBM) technology will be used.
¨
The Kanpur–Kabrai
Greenfield Highway will be a 117.7-km four/six-lane access-controlled highway
with a project cost of ₹7,145.14 crore.
¨
The highway forms part of
the Bhopal–Kanpur Economic Corridor and will be implemented by the National
Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll
model.

The Delhi Tunnel Project
is expected to generate about 7.54 lakh person-days of direct employment and
9.80 lakh person-days of indirect employment.
¨
The Kanpur–Kabrai Highway
is expected to create nearly 1.2 crore person-days of direct and indirect
employment.
¨ The Delhi tunnel will improve connectivity for traffic from Gurugram, Dwarka, and Indira Gandhi International Airport.
¨ The Kanpur–Kabrai Highway is expected to reduce travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai from about 3.5 hours to 1.5 hours.
