Justice V. Mohana was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of India

¨  Justice V. Mohana was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 2 June 2026.

¨    She became the 12th woman judge in the history of the Supreme Court of India.

¨ She is the second woman lawyer to be directly elevated from the Bar to the Supreme Court, after Indu Malhotra in 2018.

¨   The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial authority under the Constitution of India.

¨     It commenced functioning on 28 January 1950.

¨     The Court is headquartered in New Delhi.

¨ The Supreme Court Collegium is the body responsible for recommending appointments and transfers of judges in the higher judiciary.

¨     It is headed by Surya Kant and comprises the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.

¨   On 27 May 2026, the Collegium led by Chief Justice Surya Kant recommended Justice V. Mohana’s elevation to the Supreme Court.

¨     The recommendation was approved by the Central Government on 31 May 2026.

¨   Following her appointment, the working strength of the Supreme Court increased to 37 judges.

¨     The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 38 judges.
