¨  Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly for its 81st session.

¨ The election was held in the General Assembly Hall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

¨     He secured 99 votes out of 190 ballots cast.

¨     He defeated Andreas S. Kakouris of Cyprus, who received 91 votes.

¨  The President of the United Nations General Assembly is elected by UN member states for a one-year term.

¨    The 81st session of the General Assembly will begin on 8 September 2026.

¨ Under the UN’s regional rotation system, the presidency for this session was allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group.

¨  The President is elected through a secret ballot conducted in the General Assembly Hall.

¨     In this election, 190 ballots were cast.

¨     The winning candidate was required to obtain a simple majority of votes.

¨     The President of the General Assembly presides over plenary meetings.

¨  The office manages the Assembly’s agenda and facilitates discussions among member states.

¨     It is one of the principal positions within the United Nations system.

¨  The position is distinct from and independent of the office of the UN Secretary-General.
