Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stone for two high-altitude flower field projects in Leh district, Ladakh

¨     Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stone for two high-altitude flower field projects in Leh district, Ladakh, on 22 June 2026.

¨     The projects are being developed at Choglamsar and Stakna.

¨     They are described as India’s first high-altitude floriculture projects of their kind.

¨     Floriculture is the cultivation of flowers and ornamental plants for commercial and decorative purposes.

¨     The projects aim to promote floriculture, enhance biodiversity, and create livelihood opportunities for farmers in the cold desert region of Ladakh.

¨     The Choglamsar Floriculture Park will cover 92,687 square metres and will be Ladakh’s first dedicated floriculture initiative.

¨     The second project at the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, University of Ladakh, Stakna, will cover more than 1.02 lakh square metres.

¨     A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Agriculture, UT Ladakh, and the CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, for scientific and technical support.

¨  The sites will serve as demonstration centres for cultivating lilies, gladioli, and tulips.

¨ The technology and cultivation practices will later be transferred to farmer cooperatives for commercial flower cultivation.
