Private investment in India's space sector crossed USD 618.5 million

¨     Private investment in India's space sector crossed USD 618.5 million by 31 March 2026.

¨     Cumulative private funding increased from USD 100.5 million in 2021–22 to USD 618.5 million by 31 March 2026.

¨     USD 187 million of investment was recorded in 2026 alone.

¨     Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha of these figures on 23 July 2026.

¨     India's space sector includes non-governmental entities (NGEs), space startups, and private companies engaged in satellite systems, launch services, and downstream applications.

¨     The number of active space startups in India increased from 1 in 2014 to more than 400 by 2026.

¨     This growth has been driven by policy reforms that opened the space sector to greater private participation.

¨     The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) was established in 2020 as an autonomous nodal agency.

¨     IN-SPACe is responsible for promoting, authorising, and supervising private space activities in India.

¨     As of 14 July 2026, IN-SPACe had issued 105 authorisations to non-governmental entities for various space-related activities.

¨     The India Space Policy, 2023 provides the policy framework for private sector participation in the space sector.

¨     The Government has also liberalised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms for selected space activities.

¨     To support startups and private enterprises, the Government has established the IN-SPACe Seed Fund.

¨     It has also created a ₹1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund for the Space Sector to promote innovation and private investment.
