Sharmila Dhankar Wins Gold in Women’s F57 Shot Put at Commonwealth Games 2026

¨     Sharmila Dhankar won the gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow.

¨     She achieved a season-best throw of 9.81 metres.

¨     Her victory ended India’s 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games.

¨     India’s previous medal in this category came in 2006.

¨     The F57 class in para athletics includes athletes with lower limb impairments, limb deficiencies, or reduced muscle power.

¨     The event is a part of field athletics and athletes in this category use a seated throwing frame during competition.

¨     Shilpa K Shyla won the bronze medal in the same event.

¨     Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified after an official review, which helped Shilpa secure the bronze medal.

¨     This became India’s first double podium finish in a para athletics event at the Commonwealth Games.

¨     India won six medals on Day 5 of Commonwealth Games 2026 across para athletics, weightlifting, and athletics.

¨     By 28 July 2026, India’s medal tally reached 10 medals, including 2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
