National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) is a Central Sector Scheme

¨     National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) is a Central Sector Scheme launched in July 2023 by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

¨     The scheme focuses on sewer and septic tank workers, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, safety devices, and mechanised sanitation operations.

¨     NAMASTE aims to eliminate direct human contact with faecal matter by promoting mechanised cleaning methods and safety equipment.

¨     The scheme also supports Emergency Response Sanitation Units (ERSUs) in municipal corporations and districts.

¨     As of 14 July 2026, the scheme had profiled 90,942 sewer and septic tank workers, of which 89,248 workers were validated.

¨     By 15 July 2026, 87,037 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits had been provided to sanitation workers.

¨     More than 76,000 sanitation workers had been covered under various health insurance schemes.

¨     As of April 2026, 753 safety devices had been supplied to Emergency Response Sanitation Units.

¨     Financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh per Emergency Response Sanitation Unit is provided on a reimbursement basis, subject to the appointment of Responsible Sanitation Authorities and completion of worker training.

¨     The scheme provides a capital subsidy of up to ₹5 lakh for the purchase of sanitation-related vehicles and equipment.

¨     NAMASTE aims to improve worker safety, dignity, and mechanisation of sanitation services across India.
